The Italian company Kartell is famous for having pioneered the culture of plastic furniture and interior fittings in Europe and around the world, and this large and colorful book surveys the entire history of the company in hundreds of archival photos, magazine and catalog advertisements, and new color photos. The company was founded in 1949 by chemical engineer Giulio Castelli, who partnered with designer Gino Colombini to create innovative new products from plastics, and the firm won its first Compasso d’Oro award in 1955. In the 1960s Kartell produced famous designs from Anna Castelli Ferrieri and Joe Colombo, and more recently has had great successes with Philippe Starck’s Ghost Chairs and Ron Arad’s Bookworm shelves.
